Types and Selection of Die-Cutting Steel Rules

Die-cutting steel rules, we also call them as die-cutting blades or creasing blades, refer to steel-made, bevel-tipped sheet materials used for cutting dies board making.  Performance requirements for die-cutting blades include uniform steel composition, appropriate hardness combination between the blade body and cutting edge, precise specifications, and quenched cutting edges. High-quality die-cutting blades typically feature blade edge hardness significantly exceeding the body hardness, facilitating easier forming while extending cutting life.

Common thicknesses for die-cutting blades include 0.45mm, 0.53mm, 0.71mm, 1.05mm, and 1.42mm. Thicknesses are also denoted using PT units: 1PT (0.45mm), 1.5PT (0.53mm), 2PT (0.71mm), 3PT (1.07mm), 4PT (1.42mm).

Common heights include 8mm, 9.5mm, 23.8mm, 30mm, 40mm,50mm,60mm,100mm.

Based on dies types, they can be categorized into flat dies cutting blades, rotary die cutting blades (e.g., serrated blades, U-shaped blades), and special effect blades (e.g., dotted line blades, corrugated blades).

Depending on the bevel type, specifications include long center bevel blades, short center bevel blades, side bevel blades, etc.  When you making different type of cutting dies for different types of material die-cutting, the blade type must be selected according to specific requirements.

  1. Long center bevel blades

Long center blades can be used for cutting both thin and thick materials with broad applicability. Their elongated cutting edge significantly reduces die-cutting resistance and pressure while providing clean edges on thick materials. Primarily used for corrugated cardboard, leather, and plastic. Long center bevel blades are the most widely used blade type in the corrugated cardboard package industry.

  1. Short center bevel blades

Short center bevel blades are typically used for high-volume die-cutting of thin paper, cardboard, labels. Their cutting edge exhibit higher rigidity than long center bevel blades,  resulting in more stable pressure resistance, greater durability, and higher die-cutting cycle counts.

  1. Side bevelBlades and side bevel Blades(long side)

(1) Side bevel blades are used for die-cutting closed-form materials or when straight edges are required. Side bevel blades are primarily used for processing fibrous materials such as cotton fabric, non-woven fabric, and nylon fabric.

(2) long side bevel blades are used for die-cutting thick soft and fibrous materials, such as EVA and sponge.
